Thoughts on immigration

Much has been written and indeed said on the issue of immigration over the last few days. The Government has been shameful in its own handling of the whole immigration system. If they can’t tell us how many people have either emigrated or indeed immigrated, what hope if there for local services to meet the needs of any changes in population. Then of course there has been the more recent case of a Conservative candidate having his say and then having to apologise.

For what it’s worth I think there is an aspect of the whole immigration debate that whilst it has already been touched upon by various commentators, possibly warrants further discussion. Depending on what figure you read, it appears that a huge percentage of ‘jobs created’ (and I use that phrase with caution) by the current Government have gone to people who have immigrated to this country.

Some people will howl about how outrageous that is, or even start using phrases such as the current incumbent has about creating British jobs for British people. We all know that personal anecdotes can be used to back up probably any argument inexistence, but I thought I would share mine with you.

There is a store in Newark where you can buy household good at really cheap prices – in fact they are all 99p. Lots of towns have shops like that these days, and in Newark it appears that all the staff are Eastern European, or more accurately Polish.  They are the politest retail staff I have ever come across and are an absolute joy to deal with.

Now in the same town my wife’s Grandparents live in a Council Flat. The flats often have graffiti on. They are having the gardens renovated at the moment – so new sheds have been installed over the last few weeks. They lasted about 3 days before the windows in each shed were smashed, before newly painted stairwells had graffiti scrawled on them, and before some of the bins were set on fire. The police couldn’t do anything – although given the fact that all sheds apart from one were damaged could possibly point to where the culprits came from. These are apparently the same culprits who seemingly don’t go to school (though I though the Government said it would take the parents of children who failed to attend school to court). These are the same culprits who led to my wife’s 80 year old plus grandfather getting a police record because he challenged one of the so called youths.

Now forgive me for going on, but I would suggest I would rather have 100 hard working people from abroad than some of the, for want of a better word under class that seem to be part of our indigenous population.

I for one do not fear people coming to this country if they are prepared to contribute to our society, though I do think there are limits to immigration. The real question I think should be put to the Government is how can people come to this country from abroad with a superb work ethic, when there are clearly people who quite frankly refuse to get off their own arse, or as Lord Tebbit once said, get on their bike, because it is too comfortable to continue to live off the state.
